The Lace Makers of Glenmara – Book Review by Michelle Miller

Kate, a young fashion designer, has had her share of tragedy and disappointment. Her mother always told her, “you can always start again”, like in sewing. Kate decides to travel to her ancestral homeland of Ireland to clear her mind and perhaps to inspire something new in her life. What she finds there turns out to be so much more.

I enjoyed this book very much. It makes for a perfect summer read. It evoked thoughts of HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT by Whitney Otto, with the camaraderie of the women sitting around the table making lace and throughout the novel the reader learns the story behind each woman. What made this story especially rich was the setting in Ireland. Ms. Barbieri transports us to the Emerald Isle. One can almost see the lush green countryside and smell the sea-filled air. Glenmara is a charming little Irish town and the story shows how lives can change just by meeting the right person and welcoming that person with open arms. Ms. Barbieri has written a warm and comforting novel with wisdom and insight.
