I was hanging out with my cousin a few weeks ago and she was flipping through the channels where we ended up watching a reality show clip featuring some lame who calls himself “The Situation”.

“The Situation” gave us a run down of what MTV’s new reality show Jersey Shore was going to be about which was basically a group of seemingly brainless girls and guys who call themselves “guidos” and “guidetttes” causing undue drama.

I knew then it was going to be annoying, stupid and something I would never waste time watching by the 5 minute clipped I had just watched. Apparently I’m not the only one that thinks its a waste of air time. Not only do people think that but also that it exploits a stereotype and gives the vacation destination a bad rap. A lot of people find the show to be offensive to Italians, so much so that UNICO National, the nation’s largest Italian American service organization, has even asked MTV to cancel the show.

Actress Alyssa Milano who is Italian-American says she just saw it for the first time last night and was very upset about it.

“My husband actually showed me the trailer on YouTube last night, and I got upset. It upset me. I was like, ‘Turn that off!’ So no, I don’t think I’ll be watching that!’”

The star of the show, Nicole, 21, also known as “Snookie”, doesn’t see anything wrong with the show and thinks people are blowing it out of proportion. She had the following to say about it on The Wendy Williams Show today:

“The Italian, whatever, national, whatever their organization is, they don’t understand that ‘guidos’ and ‘guidettes’ are good-looking people that, you know, like to make a scene and be center of attention and just take care of themselves. They are old-fashioned. They don’t know that; they think it’s offensive, because maybe in their time it was offensive, but now it’s kind of a compliment. So they don’t understand that and that is what we are trying to say. They are way overreacting to the show. We’re 22 to 29 just having fun at the shore. They are just taking it way out of proportion.”

I can’t comment as far as whether or not I’m offended by the terms chosen because I am not Italian, but I can say that the show is stupid and I think there are a lot more important things we could be using that air time for opposed to a bunch of people who frankly are not nearly as hot as they think they are and don’t appear to be able to rub two brain cells together between the whole lot of them if they tried as hard as they could.
