Casting Calls: Martin Watches Birds; Segel Gets Stoned

Steve MartinAfter a successful co-hosting gig at the Oscars (opposite Alec Baldwin), Steve Martin is negotiating to star in a new comedy in the works with Jack Black and Owen Wilson revolving around the riveting activity of …. bird watching?

Yes, it’s true. The Hollywood Reporter states the film has been in and around production for years and even once had Dustin Hoffman attached in the now-Martin role. Apparently there really are bird-watching competitions and Mark Obmascik’s 1998 book called “The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession” explored them. Three men continuously try to outdo each other, and I am sure with this cast, hijinks and shenanigans will ensue. And hopefully hilarity as well.

The film is set to begin production in May in Canada.

In other casting news, Jason Segel (“How I Met Your Mother” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) is playing opposite Ed Helms (dentist in “The Hangover”) in “Jeff Who Lives Home,” a comedy focusing on two brothers.

Referred to in reports as “a stoner comedy,” the movie comes from writer/directors Mark and Jay Duplass and will film in Louisiana next month. Oscar nominee Jason Reitman is producing through Right Way Films.

Segel will play the “loser-lives-at-home” brother and Helms the “has-things-together” brother. Always-the-BFF Judy Greer (“27 Dresses”) might portray Helms’ wife, and the mother role is still being cast.

Both of these films have the potential to be great comedies. Awesome casts and funny ideas. What do you think about these new casting calls?

Yes! It was very funny – one that did not disappoint. I also felt like that with “The Hangover,” so the two together should be great!
