‘SNL’ Set to Spend Mother’s Day with Betty White

Betty WhiteAlmost instantaneously after this year’s Super Bowl—and probably before the trash was fully cleaned off of Bourbon Street in New Orleans—fans took to social media sites and blogs to campaign for Hollywood veteran Betty White’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” and it looks like the has petitioning paid off. The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets are stating that the TV veteran will make her first “SNL” appearance during May sweeps on May 8.

“I can’t think of a better way to spend Mother’s Day weekend than with Betty White,” Lorne Michaels, creator of the show, told reports.

During the many lackluster commercials aired during football’s big day, White’s was one of the most-talked about as she promoted Snickers by poking fun at herself and her age.

After winning several Emmys for her work on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls” and numerous appearances on games shows like “Password,” “Hollywood Squares” and “The $10,000 Pyramid,” the 88-year-old actress is gaining popularity every day and most from younger fans.

Her role in last year’s blockbuster romantic comedy “The Proposal,” made everyone fall in love with her once again, and Michaels wanted her on the show just as much as the Facebook fan clubs fought for it.

“It took on a groundswell,” Michaels said. “It isn’t something we would have said no to, [but the campaign] validated that…It was the outpouring of affection from fans, and we feel the same way.”

White also knew she had to agree to the gig.

“My agent said he’d divorce me if I didn’t do it, and I love my agent,” White said.

This particular “SNL” episode is a star-studded doozy with several returning cast members: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch.

Will you tune in to see how White does live on the sketch comedy show?
