Did You Know? – Claire Danes
When I’m looking for information to use either for articles or celebrity birthdays I find a ton of interesting things about celebrities. With that said, did you know that actress Claire Danes had her films banned from being screened in the Philippines back in 1998?
Why did this happen? Apparently they didn’t appreciate the nasty comments she made to Vogue about Manila after filming Brokedown Palace there.
She had stated that it was a “ghastly and weird city”. Furthermore she said that the city “smelled of cockroaches, with rats all over and that there is no sewage system and the people do not have anything — no arms, no legs, no eyes”.
Kim Atienza, son of then-Mayor of Manila, Lito Atienza, responded to the comments by saying that, “those are irresponsible, bigoted and sweeping statements that we cannot accept.”
And so the ban was put in place. It’s anyone’s guess if the ban has been overturned in that she later apologized for her comments. I’m guessing, with her comments about the place, she doesn’t care one way or the other.
