Grouped together as a band for the past nine years, Thriving Ivory consists of Clayton Stroope (vocals), Scott Jason (keyboards), Drew Cribley (guitars) and Paul Niedermier (drums). The band began playing for parties while attending college at UC Santa Barbara.

Cribley knew he wanted to play guitar for a living but was not sure if it was a possibility. While writing music, Cribley defined the process as a kind of organic system, telling The Star Celeb, “Some stuff is fleshed out before we start recording and other things come together when we’re in the studio, it’s pretty exciting when that happens because it’s so spontaneous.”

The tune you probably recognize of Thriving Ivory (a name decided on by sticking “two words together that we thought sounded good”) is the aforementioned “Angels on the Moon,” which received major national airplay on radio and television, endorsed by appearances on Rachael Ray and Jimmy Kimmel. “A lot of people react really strongly to that song, and it definitely paved a path for us to get exposed to a bigger audience,” Cribley explained. “We usually like to let the listeners draw their own conclusions because it means something different and unique to everyone. There are elements about 9/11 in there, but overall we’d say it’s a song about hope.”

The heavy rotation on the popular VH1’s “You Oughta Know” did not hurt the group’s notoriety either. “It takes people taking chances like that to break barriers, and we owe a lot to [VH1],” Cribley said. “It was always weird to see our video come on at like 7 a.m. when most people are getting ready for work. I’d get tons of texts saying I was eating breakfast and ‘Angels’ came on, it’s pretty cool.”

After the group’s national debut, Thriving Ivory kind of took a break and relaxed, but with the upcoming release of the new album, the band is back on the road and ready to debut the new music for the fans. Through Yourself & Back Again differs from the group’s first outing, in that there are more up-tempo songs and the piece continues to stretch Stroope’s vocal range. “The lyrics seem to have a theme of transition, going home or finding your destination… maybe a product of all the touring,” he ponders. The first single off of the record is the “pop anthem” “Where We Belong,” which Cribley explains, “The first time I heard the demo, I loved it, and had it stuck in my head for days.”

Thriving Ivory have hit a few tour stops already on their latest concert series, and Cribley said that the crowds are very responsive so far to the new material that they don’t even know quite yet. “The crowds have been good and seem to like the new songs… although they don’t know the words and can’t sing along. Everyone is very anxious and excited for the new album and for us it feels great to be playing some new songs.”

“I love 30 more than I’ve ever loved anything. I feel like I was born on my 30th birthday. It’s finally the time where I’ve fully accepted and loved myself, which I’m realising more and more each day – it is so important to love yourself. Because if you don’t love yourself than nothing really matters. For a long time, I went through life kind of beating myself up and trying to be a perfectionist and do everything right and I just thought, ‘What’s the point?’ I have faults, that’s fine. I can still strive to be better, but I’m not going to be as rough on myself as I used to and it’s just kind of alleviating all of this stress and kind of taken a weight off my shoulders and I think now I’m just happy.”

I think it’s a place we all strive to get to, way to go Kristen!

She continues saying:

“Anything and everything that my 30s have to throw at me. Part of the great place that I’m in is that I’m not planning as much anymore. I have goals, but my main goal is just to be happy. And if I plan everything out I just feel that’s what crazes your brain and messes you up and makes you feel like a failure. Wherever you are right now is okay. That’s kind of been my mantra.”

I’ve recently had a very similar change and I can tell you first hand it is very liberating to live in the present opposed to worrying about what has already happened or may or may not happen in the future. As John Lennon said “Life is what happens to you while you’re making other plans.”
